This illustration summarizes the various MCU series in the M16C platform. It also shows how the low-cost MCUs in the R8C Tiny series anchor the 8-bit, low end of the product line. The R8C chips have a CPU core that is compatible with other M16C devices from an architectural standpoint. Therefore, application software developed for embedded systems with R8C MCUs can be reused in upgraded designs that use more powerful devices in the M16C MCU platform. This software compatibility enhances design flexibility and facilitates shorter system design cycles.
