As mentioned earlier, high-speed signals are distorted when sent thru cables and traces with the media acting as a low-pass filter attenuating the high frequency content. Equalizers compensate for this loss by boosting the high frequency portion of the signal. An ideal equalizer would have the exact opposite transfer function of the transmission media.
