These two eye patterns are a good example of equalization. The pattern on the left shows a 3.125 Gbps PRBS-7 signal after 30 inches of FR4. The high frequency content of the sharp edges has been attenuated and the result is an eye that is almost closed and a large amount of deterministic jitter. The eye diagram on the right shows the same waveform after being boosted by approximately 6 dB of equalization. The eye is now open and the jitter is significantly reduced.
