As previously reviewed in the earlier parts of this series, there are now many different kinds of Li-Ion batteries optimized for different types of applications. Note that in some of the variations, there can be significant differences in the voltage ranges. While 3.8V may be in the normal operating range for most types of Li-Ion cells, it represents an overcharge fault condition for a Lithium phosphate cell. Similarly, the phosphate cell can be routinely drained down to 2.0V at high currents, while this would damage or destroy a conventional Lithium Cobalt type of cell.
