PWM D/A converters offer very high resolution (14-bits is typical), much higher than the 8-bit resolution of most MCU on-chip D/A converters. The most common application for this type of D/A is radio tuners. Another popular application is voltage-to-frequency tuners, also called voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs). VCOs are also used in some RF phase locked loop (PLL) designs. Later in this presentation, a description will be given for a digital servo system, a type of MCU-based embedded design that could be used to precisely position a signal tracking radio antenna.
