A surface mount capacitor is typically plastic encapsulated in a manner that provides for very consistent dimensions and smooth, flat surfaces for high speed pick-and-place solder operations. The standard construction of a Tantalum capacitor includes the capacitor element or anode shown in the detailed cross section that is welded to the positive lead-frame and bonded to the negative lead-frame using a silver adhesive and placed into a molded epoxy case.
