An internal view of the size of the necks and pores before and after the formation voltage has been applied is shown here. After the formation, the dielectric can grow right through some of the necks and isolate some of the interconnected Tantalum powder particles leading to a decrease in capacitance. The impact of formation voltage is larger for smaller particles. Therefore, the voltage capability decreases with higher charge powders (higher surface area, smaller particles).
