Image of KEMET Comparing Tantalum Polymer and MnO2 Capacitors - Why Use Tantalum

Tantalum is a great capacitor technology for a number of reasons. Tantalum has a stable capacitance over temperature and with applied bias. Engineers must consider how temperature and DC bias will affect a class II or III MLCC’s capacitance during operation. Tantalum capacitors also have a stable leakage current with respect to time. When it comes to the reliability and life of the component, a Tantalum capacitor is expected to have a decreasing failure rate and a life that is expected to exceed the life of all the hardware on the board. Derating the temperature and/or voltage will have a major impact on reliability and life. When compared to other technologies, Tantalum capacitors are one of the most volumetrically efficient capacitor technologies on the market. In a similar case size, a Tantalum capacitor is going to have far more capacitance than a ceramic capacitor and compared to an Aluminum capacitor with the same capacitance and voltage, the Tantalum capacitor will be much smaller in size.
