As discussed in the beginning of this module, Renesas has clear plans to continue major investment in the R8C family in order to address the needs of the 8-bit market. With the proven R8C/1x and 2x for low-to-mid-end applications and the enhanced R8C/3x and Lx series for higher performance solutions, the R8C Family already covers a significant percentage of the 8-bit market needs. However, there is still room for improvement. Based on current line-up and market trends, Renesas has identified three key areas which are being considered for future development. These areas include: lower power, lower-pin counts, and customizing the series to fit into specific applications such as home appliances and building/industrial automation applications, capacitive touch, USB, sensoring and Metering ASSPs.
