When to Terminate LVCMOS Outputs

Not all LVCMOS outputs need to be terminated. As seen on this slide, the general rule of thumb is that if the trace is greater than a certain length an output termination must be applied to eliminate any type of reflection on the clock signal. A combination of trace length, rising or falling edge rate (from the AC tables in the device datasheet) and in some instances board material can be used to determine how far the user can drive the clock signal without the need for a termination; for anything greater it is recommended to use one.
