LTC3866-Slide2

The LTC3866 is the first true current mode controller that breaks through the minimum 1 mΩ required DC resistance inductor and still maintains stability. A low DC resistance inductor increases the efficiency and allows for a higher maximum output current. In the past a voltage mode controller was required when using a sub 1 mΩ inductor, and a true current mode controller could not be used due to excessive jitter that resulted with the very low ramp sense voltage. A current mode controller has several benefits over a voltage mode controller as follows: more reliable during a short circuit or overload condition, easy to parallel outputs, faster transient response and easier loop compensation.
