This graph shows an EMI scan of a clock with and without spread spectrum turned on. The blue line shows the fundamental and harmonics without spread spectrum. The EMI of the fundamental clearly violates the FCC limit. The red line shows the same clock with spread spectrum turned on, and it can be seen that the energy is “spread out” and now passes the FCC limit. The same is true for the harmonics. The same amount of energy is present, however the strong spike is eliminated and reduced to an acceptable level that is able to pass FCC regulation.
