The choice of fluid depends on what operating range the heat pipe needs to function in and the metal which the heat pipe is made of.  Water has a useful operating range of 30 to 200ºC; Ammonia has a useful operating range of -60 to 100ºC; Sodium has a useful operating range of 600 to 1200ºC.
