DS168x All Silicon Elapsed Time and Event Counters Slide 6

In addition, the DS1683 features a 4-Byte password, which optionally prevents changes to the ALARM registers. Once an ALARM state is reached, notifying the user of preventative maintenance requirement, the repair technician who knows the password can clear the count and/or EVENT registers and renew the process when the product is reintroduced in the field. The DS1682 is a similar RC oscillator product from Analog Devices. The key distinguishing feature from the DS1683 is that once the ALARMs are set, they cannot be cleared. With that, the DS1682 is more tailored for applications notifying the user of an expiration of a warranty, which is generally a one-time event in the life of the product, as opposed to PM scheduling which can occur multiple times in its lifetime.
