MCP22350 Power Delivery Port Controller

Microchip MCP22350 controllers are highly integrated, small form factor USB Type-C PD port controllers designed to adhere to the USB Type-C cable and connector and USB PD 3.1 specifications.

The MCP22350 provides cable plug orientation and detection for a USB Type-C receptacle. It ensures the cable is correctly inserted and aligned with the connector. It implements baseband communication with a partner USB Type-C device via the integrated USB PD 3.1 MAC. This communication allows the negotiation of alternate modes over USB Type-C connectors using the PD 3.1 protocol.

The MCP22350 serves as a companion power delivery controller to an external Microchip MCU/SoC using the integrated serial peripheral interface (SPI). It can control the power delivery current and voltage using an external power device.

By integrating many of the analog discrete components required for USB Type-C PD applications, including two VCONN FETs with Rp/Rd switching, a power switch, and current and voltage sense circuitry for overvoltage/current detection, the MCP22350 provides a low-cost, low-power, and small footprint solution. It caters to both consumer (notebooks, desktop PCs, smartphones, tablets, monitors, docking stations) and industrial (point of sale systems, printers) market segments.
