USB LED Strip with Light Sensor

The Kitronik LED strip with an integrated sensor is purpose-built for use in custom enclosures where low-power lighting is needed. Its onboard sensor makes it ideal for applications such as night-lights or desk lighting that automatically activates in low ambient light. For continuous illumination, the sensor can be easily bypassed using a built-in switch.

The board draws less than 100 mA, making it suitable for power from a standard computer USB port. It measures approximately 50 mm in length and 10 mm in width, and it includes a mounting hole at one end. Key features include five high-brightness LEDs (luminous intensity of 8,000 mCd), a micro-USB power input, a phototransistor, and a three-position switch. GND and +5 V pads are also available for connecting alternative power sources.

The side-mounted slide switch offers three settings: on, off, and sense. The on and off positions control the LEDs manually, while the sense setting uses the phototransistor at the end of the board to activate the LEDs when ambient light falls below a set threshold.

A deliberate gap separates the phototransistor from the rest of the board components, allowing enclosure designs to include a barrier. This ensures that light from the LEDs doesn’t interfere with the operation of the sensor.

The LED strip can be used in many fun projects such as creating a night-light.
